Obituary: Alan Herbert Kyber, 81, died on Friday, July 10, 2015 at the Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House.
Born in Newark NJ, Mr. Kyber was the son of the late Max and Katherine Schnurr Kyber.
He grew up in Washington DC and graduated in the Washington suburb schools from Bladensburg HS in 1952, attended Furman University 1952-56, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education. He also graduated from American University with a Master’s Degree in Education Administration in 1960. He also served in the Officer’s Commission of the United States Army Reserve where he was posted both with the Armored Tank Battalion and The Medical Corps.
His wife of 58 years, Betty-Anne Neal Kyber; his son, Christopher Alan Kyber; and his brothers Fredrick and Raymond Kyber preceded him in death.
Alan met Betty-Anne at Furman University and they were married on Dec. 28, 1956. His three children, Tracey Kyber Carpenter, Gary Neal Kyber, Elizabeth Ashley Kyber and spouses James Carpenter and Cindy Foxworth Kyber survive him. He has six grandchildren, Laura Paige, Courtney, Jenna, Bryan, Allie and Christopher Rabin.
Alan Kyber was a basketball and baseball player at Furman University and upon graduation, returned to his former high school to begin a career in coaching and teaching at all educational levels. He was an Honor Emeritus member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches where he attended their convention, held in association with the NCAA Final Four for 48yrs. He holds a 500 win lifetime achievement award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). As a teacher and coach, he was included in sixteen college and twenty-four high school teams as either an assistant or head coach. He also worked part-time with professional basketball teams for six years. He had his own player scouting business and created and marketed his own statistical analysis methodology for players and teams called “Kyber Stats.” He has ascended in rank in public education as a teacher to a principal and served at all levels teaching most subjects and remained an active substitute teacher till his death.
A lifetime Lutheran, he is a member of Grace Lutheran Church where his funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 14th, 2015 at 2PM. Visitation will be at Greene Funeral Home Northwest Chapel, 2133 Ebenezer Rd, Rock Hill on Monday, July 13th from 6-8PM. Burial will be immediately after the service at Forest Hills Cemetery.
